New York Times challenges Donald Trump to sue it over sexual abuse story

The New York Times has refused Donald Trump’s demand to retract an article in which two women allege the US Republican presidential nominee sexually abused them.
“Multiple women not mentioned in our article have publicly come forward to report on Mr. Trump’s unwanted advances. Nothing in our article has had the slightest effect on the reputation that Mr. Trump, through his own words and actions, has already created for himself,” the newspaper’s legal team wrote in a statement on Thursday to Trump's lawyer.
One woman, Jessica Leeds, told the Times more than three decades ago Trump sexually assaulted her during a flight to New York. Another woman said that the billionaire kissed her without her consent. 
In a letter to Times editor Dean Baquet, Trump’s lawyer said the "libelous" article is an attempt to damage Trump's presidential campaign, and he demanded the newspaper not only remove it but also issue a retraction and apology.
Trump on Thursday afternoon described the women's allegations as “totally and absolutely false.”
"These claims are all fabricated, they’re pure fiction and outright lies,” Trump said. "These events never happened and the people who said them meekly understand.”
He also said he was “preparing" to sue the newspaper.
“If Mr. Trump disagrees, if he believes that American citizens had no right to hear what these women had to say and that the law of this country forces us and those who would dare to criticize him to stand silent or to be punished, we welcome the opportunity to have a court set him straight,” the Times' statement reads.
This comes after The Washington Post last week released a 2005 tape in which Trump is heard making vulgar comments about women and having a conversation about trying to have sex with a married woman.
In an interview with Fox News on Tuesday night, Trump said media outlets do not like him because of what he stands for, and have launched a coordinated attack on him.
Trump said, “Before I ran I used to get great press… Now I can be on the front page of The New York Times in three different stories, and every one of them is a hit job. It’s a very unfair press.”  
“I knew it would be bad but I didn’t know this bad,” he stated.
