The Managing Director of Wonderful Spring Farms, Mr Michael Abiodun, has urged youths to venture into farming and poultry, citing its potential to boost prospects and make youths valuable societal contributors.
Abiodun made the remark on Tuesday at a Poultry Farmers Forum organised by Wonderful Spring Farms in partnership with Hendrix4U in Ibadan.
The programme had its theme as “Strategic and Smart Poultry Farming.”
He advised unemployed youths to venture into farming, particularly poultry, as a means to generate income.
“In the past, people were reluctant to introduce themselves as farmers, but today, many of us are proud to do so.
“Through poultry farming, we have gained relevance in the society, paid our children’s school fees, built houses, bought cars, and created comfortable homes,” he said.
Abiodun stressed the need for poultry farmers to continually acquire knowledge and equip themselves with relevant skills to remain competitive, boost production, and contribute to achieving food security.
“There is a need to acquire skills and knowledge to stay ahead of one’s contemporaries.
“Through forums like this, we aim to regularly create avenues for farmers and keep them informed on how to succeed in poultry farming,” he said.
Abiodun noted that poultry farming could contribute significantly to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
He stated that the training provided to farmers had the potential to transform their financial status and greatly improve their livelihoods.
“We also have a scheme called the Hendrix4U programme, through which we provide feed and technical support to farmers, some of which is offered on credit,” Abiodun said.
The Deputy General Manager of Chi Farms Ltd, Dr Emagboron Oginga, urged farmers to feed their birds with high-quality feed rich in essential nutrients to prevent diseases.
Oginga also emphasised the importance of understanding modern techniques and best practices for effective poultry rearing.
He urged farmers to ensure all vaccinations were up to date, train their workers, and consistently maintain accurate records and data.
“Birds are less likely to fall sick or die unnecessarily when the right techniques are applied.
“Proper feeding, access to clean water, and timely healthcare are all essential for running a successful poultry business,” he said.
Other farm managers, including Mrs Seyi Adeleke of Skretting Nigeria, commended the organisers, noting that the forum successfully reached out to small holder farmers. (NAN)
