Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Pope Francis, describing the late Pontiff as a beacon of humility, moral courage, and unwavering service to humanity.
In a heartfelt condolence message issued on Monday, Atiku extended his sympathies to the Holy See, the Catholic Church in Nigeria and around the world, and the entire Christian community.
“The departure of Pope Francis marks the end of an era defined by humility, moral courage, and an unwavering commitment to the service of humanity,” Atiku said.
“He was a shepherd of the most vulnerable and worked for a better and united world.”
Reflecting on the legacy of the late Pope, Atiku described him as a spiritual leader whose voice championed the poor and marginalized, and whose compassion served as a bridge in a world plagued by division.
“That his soul should be called home on a sacred day for Christians is a solemn and divine punctuation—one that reminds us that even as the earthly journey ends, a new and glorious dawn awaits those who have lived for others,” he added.
Atiku called on Christians in Nigeria and across the globe to find strength in the memory of Pope Francis, urging them to uphold the values of unity, compassion, and peace that defined his life and papacy.
“May his soul, now freed from the burdens of this world, find eternal rest in the presence of the Almighty,” he concluded.
