The Principal and Chief Executive Officer of the Petroleum Training Institute (PTI), Effurun, Delta State, Engr. Dr. Samuel Onoji, has reaffirmed the institute’s dedication to delivering high-quality technical and vocational education tailored to Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.
He emphasized that PTI is well-equipped with experienced faculty and modern facilities to provide students with the expertise required to thrive in the industry.
Speaking at the 2024/2025 Combined Academic Session Matriculation Ceremony for both full-time and School of Industrial Continuing Education students, held at the institute’s conference center on March 28, 2025, Dr. Onoji expressed his delight in welcoming the new students and their families to this significant occasion.
Addressing the 1,625 newly admitted students, he congratulated them on securing a place at PTI, highlighting the institute’s ongoing collaborations with international organizations and industry stakeholders to enhance curriculum development, research, and specialized training.
“Our programs are designed to bridge skill gaps in the oil and gas sector, ensuring our graduates are fully prepared for the demands of the industry,” he stated.
“PTI remains committed to training skilled manpower by equipping students with the knowledge and competencies necessary for success in this highly technical and competitive field.”
Dr. Onoji urged students to maintain discipline and adhere to PTI’s zero-tolerance policy on misconduct, warning against examination malpractice, cultism, drug abuse, theft, forgery, harassment, misuse of social media, and other social vices.
“We expect all students to uphold integrity, respect, and discipline as outlined in the Students' Handbook,” he emphasized. “Success is built on hard work, focus, and perseverance.”
He further reminded students that the oil and gas industry is constantly evolving, requiring professionals who are adaptable, innovative, and committed to excellence.
Encouraging them to maximize PTI’s state-of-the-art learning environment, he also advised participation in extracurricular activities such as student organizations, internships, mentorship programs, and research initiatives to enhance their academic experience.
“To achieve success, set clear academic and career goals, stay focused, and consistently work on self-improvement,” he advised.
Dr. Onoji also highlighted available financial support through the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), a federal government initiative aimed at easing the financial burden on tertiary students.
“The NELFUND scheme, introduced under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, provides zero-interest loans to cover tuition and living expenses,” he explained. “Applying for this loan is straightforward—students only need to submit their admission number, JAMB number, NIN, and BVN online.”
He revealed that PTI received its first disbursement from NELFUND on February 11, 2025, which was successfully allocated to eligible students.
He urged those interested in applying to seek guidance from the Students’ Affairs Office.
In his closing remarks, Dr. Onoji reassured parents and guardians of PTI’s commitment to fostering academic excellence, personal growth, and character development.
“I welcome all new students to PTI and encourage them to strive for excellence,” he said.
“Together, we will continue strengthening Nigeria’s oil and gas sector through world-class technical education.”
The newly admitted students will pursue programs in diverse fields, including Computer Science and Information Technology, Electrical/Electronics Engineering, Environmental Science and Management Technology, Industrial Safety and Environmental Technology, Science Laboratory Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering Technology, Petroleum Engineering and Geosciences, Petroleum Marketing and Business Studies, Petroleum and Natural Gas Processing, Welding Engineering/Offshore Technology, and more.
Expressing his joy, Oghenemaro Great, a Computer Science and Information Technology student, shared his excitement: “I am grateful to God for making this day possible. After going through the rigorous admission process, it feels rewarding to be part of this matriculation ceremony. I am determined to excel in my studies.”
