The Campaign for Democracy (CD) has criticized the actions of suspended Kogi Central Senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, alleging that her recent engagements have put Nigeria’s image at risk before the international community.
The organization expressed concern that instead of addressing the issues surrounding her suspension through the appropriate democratic channels, she has chosen to wage a campaign against the Senate.
In a statement released on Thursday, CD asserted that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s conduct both within and outside Nigeria has negatively impacted the nation’s reputation.
The group described her actions as misconduct and insisted that she must publicly apologize.
It further urged political leaders to separate partisan interests from matters that affect the country’s stability and image.
The organization particularly condemned her claims that linked her suspension to allegations of sexual harassment against the Senate President.
CD criticized her participation in the Inter-Parliamentary Union without official authorization, stating that such actions were improper and amounted to a misrepresentation of Nigeria at an international level.
Expressing disappointment, CD noted that despite taking legal action, Akpoti-Uduaghan opted for media engagements and international lobbying instead of allowing due process to take its course.
The organization warned that such an approach could weaken public trust in Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
Furthermore, CD commended the constituents of Kogi Central for initiating a recall process, emphasizing that accountability is essential in a democracy.
It reiterated that lawmakers must remember their positions are a product of public trust and service, and not personal entitlements.
The organization urged Akpoti-Uduaghan to adopt a more constructive approach by respecting the dignity of her office and working towards national unity rather than engaging in international controversies.
It also encouraged Nigerians to seek dialogue and peaceful resolution of political disputes, stressing that personal grievances should not come at the expense of Nigeria’s global image.
