US President Donald Trump's approval rating dips to new low in Fox News poll

US President Donald Trump's approval rating has dipped to the lowest mark it has been in any Fox News poll.

According to the survey released on Wednesday, only 38 percent of voters approved the president’s performance, which is a 4 percentage points drop from September and a full 10 points since the poll's first post-inaugural results in February.

The poll also found that 57 percent of voters disapproved the president’s job performance.

The new findings pointed out a continued erosion of national support for the president, who received low mark across several major policy areas.

Trump’s approval remained high among Republican -- 83 percent – but his support among independents dropped to 30 percent while 9 in 10 Democrats expressed disapproval of the president's performance.

Only 1 in 3 Americans endorsed his approach on key foreign policy issues, including his direction on Iran and North Korea. And the economy, which had been Trump's relative strong suit in prior polls, saw a 5 percent drop in approval from September – only 44 percent now approve his economic policies.

The poll was conducted by telephone and live interview from October 22 to 24. About 1,005 registered voters participated in the poll and had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

According to the latest Harvard-Harris survey released earlier this week, most Americans – 85 percent -- disapprove of Trump’s job in office.

In September, 45 percent Americans endorsed Trump’s job amid praise for the federal government’s response to the hurricanes that battered several states.

But since then Trump has faced severe criticism for his poor response to a hurricane that devastated Puerto Rico.

Trump has also been under fire recently over his controversial remarks about Gold Star families and his unending criticism of football players who kneel during the national anthem.  All this has affected his job approval ratings.

In August, Trump set records for low presidential approval records with his dismally low approval ratings, including the lowest mark ever for a president in his first year in office.

His approval rating of 34 percent was worse than former President Barack Obama's ever was.

Low approval ratings impede a president's ability to push an agenda through Congress and make it more likely the president's party will lose seats in Congress in the midterm elections.

Trump's average approval rating of 40 percent since he entered office is even lower than the previous average low for a first-term president, 46 percent, set by Jimmy Carter, who endured several crises during his term.

Since Gallup began tracking presidential approval in 1945, only four presidents spent significant time below 40 percent during their first four years.
