70% of Americans say civility got worse since US President Donald Trump election: NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist Poll

Seven in 10 Americans believe the level of civility in Washington has deteriorated since the election of President Donald Trump last year, a new poll has found.

This is while just 6 percent of Americans say the overall tone of discourse has improved since the election and twenty percent say it has not changed, according to the NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll.

The survey revealed little difference in how Americans view civility across partisan lines.

Over 80 percent of Democrats say civility has gotten worse since the Republican billionaire was elected, and 70 percent of Independents are of the same opinion.

Sixty-five percent of Republicans say civility between their party and Democrats has declined since November. Only 12 percent of Republicans say the tone of discourse in the country has improved.

"There's strong consensus across the board that civility in Washington is on the outs," said Lee Miringoff, director of The Marist College Institute for Public Opinion.

The poll has also found high levels of distrust for the nation’s democratic institutions among the public.

A plurality of Americans - 46 percent - say they do not have very much trust in Congress, while 22 percent say they do not have any trust in the legislative branch at all. This is while only 6 percent of those surveyed express a great deal of trust in Congress.

On trust for the media, the US is deeply divided along partisan lines.

Democrats tend to have more trust for the media (56 percent), but only 9 percent of Republicans say they trust the press, while 59 percent say they do not trust it at all.

Overall, thirty percent of all Americans say they have some degree of trust in the media, while 37 percent do not have any trust in the press. 

Trump has repeatedly attacked the news media as "fake," and in recent days he has unleashed a vicious Twitter war against journalists and reporters.

The Trump administration itself does not fare well with the American people. Just more than 6 in 10 Americans say they either do not have very much trust or any trust in the administration.

Nearly 70 percent of Democrats say they do not trust the White House at all. However, 47 percent of Republicans say they trust the administration a good amount, with 37 percent saying they trust the administration a great deal.

Only intelligence and law enforcement agencies appear to engender much goodwill, with 60 percent saying they have some degree of trust in them.

A Gallup poll released Sunday showed that President Trump’s disapproval rating appears to be on the path to reach 60 percent.
