Kiwi pleads guilty to hit-and-run death of Tanami Nayler in Melbourne

Tanami Nayler had only been in Melbourne for a few hours to visit a friend when a speeding car struck and killed her.

The woman died instantly when a car driven by Kiwi Nicholas Michael Davison ran a red light and struck her as she crossed the road on July 30 last year.

Davison pleaded guilty in the Victorian County Court on today to five charges, including culpable driving causing death, reckless conduct endangering life, and failing to stop after a fatal accident.

The 23-year-old man has also pleaded guilty to breaking into a car rental office and stealing the car he was driving.

Nayler, 24, was killed hours after she flew into Melbourne from Sydney to spend the weekend with a friend to celebrate a recent job promotion.

Prosecutor Jeremy McWilliams said it was about 2.30am when Nayler and her friend began their walk home and crossed the intersection at the corner of King St and Hawke St in the city centre.

Nayler's friend said the 24-year-old was walking about one to three metres in front of him."I heard a car screeching and then she said 'oh my God'," he told police."She attempted to run to avoid the vehicle, but there was no time to avoid being struck," McWilliams said.

"The car hit her and didn't slow down. I couldn't see where she went, she just wasn't there anymore."

Davison was driving at more than 150km/h when he struck Nayler.

"The force of the impact carrying her body 84 metres, where she then struck a traffic control signal and a street sign ... her body travelling a further 10 metres," the prosecutor said.Davison lost control of the car after the collision and hit a pole before he fled the scene.

"The accused immediately ran from the crashed vehicle, across the intersection and past Nayler's body," McWilliams said.

Davison disposed of his clothes before he was arrested 45 minutes later.

A blood sample was taken about 10 hours later and it's estimated his blood alcohol reading at the time of the crash was between 0.129 and 0.228.

Davison had been drinking with friends that night before going to the CBD, where he stole the rental car after being refused entry to a nightclub for being too drunk.
