American Olympic star Tyson Gay’s daughter killed in crossfire in Kentucky

American Olympic star Tyson Gay’s daughter has been killed after getting caught in the middle of a shooting in the state of Kentucky, police say.

Trinity Gay, 15, was shot in the neck at a restaurant in Lexington, Kentucky, on Sunday morning, according to police. She died later on in a hospital.

Trinity, a rising track and field star, was killed after two groups of men in two cars engaged in a shootout.

“She didn’t make it. I’m so confused,” Tyson Gay said of his daughter. “She was just here last week for fall break. It’s so crazy. I have no idea what happened.”

Police were investigating the matter and had detained two suspects whose car matches one of the two cars’ descriptions.

Just like her father, Trinity ran 100-meter and 200-meter sprints and was making a name for herself at her high school.

Tyson himself was part of the team that won a silver medal for the US in the 4x100-meter relay at the 2012 London Games. The medal was stripped after he tested positive for steroids a year later.

Gay holds the US 100-meter sprint record and is the joint second-fastest 100-meter runner of all time, behind Usain Bolt.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), firearms are the cause of death for more than 33,000 people in the US every year, a number that includes accidental discharge, murder, and suicides.

So far this year, nearly 45,000 gun-related incidents have killed over 11,500 people, injuring nearly 24,000 more, according the Gun Violence Archive project, which tracks shootings across the US.

Murders and other violent crimes in US cities rose by 10 percent in 2015 compared to a year earlier, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said in its annual report last week, fueling concerns that the nation’s more-than two-decade trend of falling crime rates may be ending.
